TWC 514 - VISUALIZING DATA & INFORMATION

In TWC 514, the project consisted of collecting data and information from an online source with a relatively large scale of information to present, create, and develop a presentation. For my visualizing data & information project, I decided to choose a topic that was close to home and contained an interesting set of information regarding job vacancies in the Navajo Nation Government. In the last year, job vacancies on the Navajo Nation were high across the entire reservation with the issue of many vacancies are located in Window Rock, AZ. Which is the location of the official Navajo Nation Government. By collecting data and information about these vacancies, I concluded my research by focusing on the location of these jobs, the total traveling mileage for someone on the reservation to have a job working for the government, and the number of vacancies from each town. As a result, the closing information is given solutions to overcome such vacancies across the Navajo Reservation.

THE DATA & VISUALIZATION

THE PROCESS

During the process of developing visual concepts of information related to graph charts. The critical thinking process of the information was collecting what would be a direct impact upon residence of the Navajo Nation. As we can see, the graph to the left showcases the average mileage from towns across the Navajo Nation needing to trave into Window Rock, AZ. We also see data representing the number of job vacancies from each department of the Navajo government. The focus I had regarding this information connects with the overall geographical map of the Navajo Reservation and the location of all such job vacancies. This implies:

  • Total mileage residence of the Navajo government will need to travel to get to work in Window Rock, AZ.

  • The total number of vacancies from each department.

  • The average mileage one would need to take per week.

Why I chose to inform my audience of the total mileage, number of vacancies across the departments, and the average mileage from each town is to support my argument about finding a solution to reduce these vacancy numbers. By learning of how much a tribal member will need to travel in order to work in Window Rock, AZ can impact how the government officials will look toward finding solutions of their own or to implement new plans to get employees from home to work, and from work to home.

In the following graphical table, we will notice the spread of all vacancies from least number of vacancies to the greatest number of vacancies by using shapes to indicate total amount.

RESULT

In collecting the data and presenting them as visual elements to support the presentation and understanding of how such information is critical for an audience like Navajo Government officials. The goal of the data as a presentation would intend to persuade government officials of solutions to the number of vacancies across the reservation. Not only has rhetorical knowledge been integrated in the presentation, but the use of technology is also heavily implied when developing such visual elements such as the geographical map of all vacancy locations. All data had been critically analyzed to be represented in a manner that will best communicate important information and to be understood during the process of following the data.
